Detailed Gentamycin Injection Description
Features:
a) Specifications: each 2ml ampoule contains 2ml solution of
gentamicin sulphate equivalent to 80mg gentamicin base with
preservative
b) Indication: used to cure bacteraemia, post surgical
infection, septicaemia, peritonitis,
meningitis, severe burn and associated infection, pneumonia, osteomyelitis, severe neonatal infections
(neonatal ), cerebral ventriculitis, otitis, prophylaxis and
treatment of endocarditis due to streptococci and urinary tract
infection
c) Synergistic action happens when combined with metronidazole
or clindamycin for mixed anaerobic and aerobic infections
(separate injections should be used and not to be ), or when
combined with ampicillin or benzyl penicillin for enterococci and
streptococcal infections (separate injections should be
administered and not to be )
d) Contra indication: for pregnant women and the elder patients: the
dosage should be reduced
e) Gentamicin is excreted by simple glomerular filteration
f) Dosage frequency may be predicted by assessing creatinine
clearance
g) With gentamicin, the vestibular mechanism may be affected when
serum level of 10ug / ml is exceeded
h) Precaution: does not require refrigerated conditions, can be mixed
with the following: penicillin, erythromycin, cephalosporin, heparin
and sodium bicarbonate
i) Dosage and administration: can be administered intramuscularly
or intravenously
j) Suggested dosage:
1) Adults:
9) 60kg and above: 80mg / 8h
) Less than 60kg: 60mg / 8h
2) Children (up to 12 ): 6mg / kg in 24 hours in 3 equally
divided dosage
3) Infants (up to 6 ): equally divided dosage of 3mg / kg in
12 hours
k) Packing: 80mg / 2ml / ampoule x 10ampoules / box
l) Storage: to be protected from light and stored at cool and dry
place
